When they finally did, it took them years to decompress from a decade on the road. Although the duo is starting an arena tour in September, this time they are determined to pace themselves. We love mistakes — the right mistakes. They can make all the difference. Carney had a simple explanation for why the Black Keys put the band on pause at their commercial peak. But it pulls you further away from what you actually want to do, which is make music.

N o one in this busy Hollywood organic coffee shop looks like they might have just sold out Madison Square Garden — least of all, perhaps, the compact, thick-bearded dude in the jean jacket shuffling toward a corner table. Sitting down with his coffee, he begins to process some news he got via e-mail a couple of minutes ago. What the fuck is going on? Everybody who reaches that kind of level always has a look. Are glasses and beard enough? It kind of is. As the decade progressed, trends came and went — garage rock, dance rock, emo — while the Keys stayed in their own sealed-off world, their sound gradually evolving. Then we started sort of digging into these records that we love, and trying to figure out why it is we love them so much, besides the sonics. With rock at one of its lowest commercial ebbs, they became one of a very few young guitar bands to reach the masses.
The group consists of Dan Auerbach guitar , vocals and Patrick Carney drums. The duo began as an independent act, recording music in basements and self-producing their records, before they eventually emerged as one of the most popular garage rock artists during a second wave of the genre's revival in the s. The band's raw blues rock sound draws heavily from Auerbach's blues influences, including Junior Kimbrough , Howlin' Wolf , and Robert Johnson. Friends since childhood, Auerbach and Carney founded the group after dropping out of college. Over the next decade, the Black Keys built an underground fanbase through extensive touring of small clubs, frequent album releases and music festival appearances, and broad licensing of their songs. Their third album, Rubber Factory , received critical acclaim and boosted the band's profile, eventually leading to a record deal with major label Nonesuch Records in The group's commercial breakthrough came in with Brothers , which along with its popular single " Tighten Up ", won three Grammy Awards.
